Marudhamalai Arulmigu Subramaniyaswami Temple
๐ A Sacred Hill Shrine Blending History, Healing & Devotion
Marudhamalai Arulmigu Subramania Swamy Temple is one of the most revered spiritual landmarks of Coimbatore, standing majestically atop the Marudhamalai hills along the Western Ghats. Dedicated to Lord Murugan, the beloved Tamil deity, this temple is deeply rooted in ancient history, devotion, and nature.
Mentioned in the Sangam literary work Purananuru, Marudhamalai is believed to have been revered by Tamil kings long before the present structure was built in the 12th century. The hill derives its name from the abundance of Marutham trees, known for their medicinal value, which is why the area is also fondly called โMooligai Malaiโ โ the Hill of Herbs.
The presiding deity, Arulmigu Subramania Swamy, is also worshipped as Marudhamalai Aandavar and Maruthachala Moorthy. According to legend, the renowned Siddhar Pambatti Siddhar performed penance here and was blessed by Lord Murugan along with Valli and Deivanai, making Marudhamalai the seventh Padaiveedu of Lord Murugan.
Devotees can reach the temple by climbing over 800 sacred steps, a journey believed to rejuvenate both body and soul. Along the path are shrines for Thanthondri Vinayagar, Idumban, and resting mandapams. At the hilltop, worship at the Aadhi Moolasthanam and the rare Panchamukha Vinayagar under five intertwined trees adds to the templeโs spiritual uniqueness.
Peaceful, powerful, and timeless, Marudhamalai is a must-visit spiritual destination in Coimbatoreโs city guide.
